MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has plunged the country into chaos similar to the one experienced in 1991, when the civil war broke out in the Horn of Africa nation following the toppling of the military regime of Siad Barre, a member of Somali parliament Malik Abdalla said on Saturday.
“You remember, during the reign of Farmajo, that Hassan Sheikh and his team repeatedly threatened a return to 1991 – when the civil war broke out in the country,” the MP told a press conference in Mogadishu.
“Congratulations! You have delivered on your promise of returning the country back to 1991,” he added.
Another Somali MP at the press conference called on President Mohamud to resign, adding that the only legacy remaining for him to leave is making history as Africa’s first sitting leader to quit for failure to serve his people.
In a similar press conference held by the MPs last week, they had threatened an impeachment motion against the Prime Minister Hamza Abdi Barre, whose alleged failure to come up with a clear roadmap for bringing an end to the country’s political instability has drawn sharp criticism from many in Somalia’s powerful political stakeholders and power brokers.
