MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, accompanied by the first lady and other officials departed from Adan Adde International Airport in Mogadishu for Qatar’s capital, Doha, his office said on Monday.

He is due to attend the opening ceremony of Fifa Arab Cup in Qatar’s capital on Tuesday, the presidential office added, in a twitter post written in Arabic.

The visit comes after the Somali leader received an invitation from Qatari emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

Farmajo is also expected to meet Qatari government officials during his visit in Doha, the first since his presidential term expired at the beginning of this year. It comes as widespread election fraud and manipulation allegations mount in Somalia, weeks after reports emerged that Qatar airlifted suitcases of dollars to support the Somali president’s bid for re-election.
