Somalia’s president travels to UAE as fiscal crisis deepens post-US aid cut

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has embarked on an undisclosed visit to the United Arab Emirates (UAE), as his government grapples with significant financial challenges following the United States’ decision to cut financial assistance to Mogadishu.

The visit comes at a delicate time, with Somalia accusing the UAE of undermining its sovereignty. The Gulf nation recently sparked controversy by inviting the leader of Somaliland, Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi, to the World Governments Summit.

Somaliland, a breakaway region that has operated as a de facto independent state for over three decades, is still recognized by Somalia as part of its territory. Mogadishu has consistently opposed Somaliland’s efforts to gain international recognition.

Somali Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi recently stated that the government would take decisive action against Abu Dhabi for what it perceives as a violation of Somalia’s sovereignty. However, State Minister of Foreign Affairs Ali Bal’ad downplayed the incident, describing it as “not a big deal” and highlighting the UAE’s longstanding support for Somalia.

The UAE has been a key ally of the current Somali administration, funding the training of tens of thousands of Somali security forces and providing critical financial and logistical support. Despite the recent tensions, the UAE’s role in Somalia’s stabilization efforts remains significant.

President Mohamud’s visit to the UAE is expected to include high-level meetings with Emirati officials, though the agenda remains undisclosed. The trip underscores the complex dynamics between the two nations, balancing diplomatic tensions with strategic partnerships.
