MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Authorities in Puntland, a semi-autonomous region in northeastern Somalia, have announced the arrest of seven terror suspects along with the seizure of five suicide drones. The arrests occurred on the road between Galkayo and Garowe, a key route in the region.
Puntland security officials have not yet disclosed the destination or origin of the terror suspects and the suicide drones. The details regarding their intended target and the source of the equipment remain unclear as investigations continue.
Authorities have yet to provide evidence supporting their claim regarding the terror suspects and the seized drones.
The arrest of terror suspects and seizure of suicide drones in Puntland follows recent reports by U.S. officials, who informed CNN that Yemen’s Houthi group might be supplying advanced weapons, including drones, to Al-Shabaab. Additionally, a British diplomat recently highlighted alleged links between the Houthis and the Somali insurgent group, accusing the Yemeni faction of destabilizing activities across the region.
The UN office in Mogadishu has recently issued a warning about potential suicide drone attacks on their compounds in the capital. They have advised their offices to enhance vigilance and promptly report any sightings of drones overhead as a precautionary measure.
