Somalia’s Puntland state holds municipal elections in first vote for decades

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Residents in northeastern Somalia’s semi-autonomous region of Puntland on Thursday voted in the first municipal elections for decades despite strong opposition from the federal government.

The vote is set to determine the outcome of political crisis in the region where opposition accuses the incumbent President of buying time to serve beyond his constitutional mandate.

Local forces opposition the vote had seized ballot boxes in the town of Burtinle in the south of the region days earlier in an attempt to disrupt the election, but authorities insisted that the election would be held as planned.
