MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s security forces ended an Al-Shabaab siege at the office of the mayor of Mogadishu inside the headquarters of Banadir regional administration, Ministry of Information said on Sunday.
Militants stormed the heavily-guarded complex in the city’s green-zone early on Sunday after blasting their way into the compound, killing at least 5 people, according to a government statement.
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the bomb and gun attack, saying it had killed 34 people, including state employees and soldiers.
Local media reported that a number of officials and employees were rescued. Videos circulated online showed people jumping from the windows of the building immediately after the attack began.
