Somalia’s Senate chooses Ali Sha’ban Ibrahim as first deputy speaker

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Senate elected Ali Sha’ban Ibrahim as its first deputy speaker in a vote held on Tuesday during security tight in the heavily fortified Afisyoni camp in the capital Mogadishu.

Ali Sha’ban won 28 votes against 25 for his rival Abdihakin Moalim Ahmed, a candidate favored by Galmudug President, who is allied with Somalia’s incumbent leader Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo.

It comes hours after veteran Somali politician Abdi Hashi Abdullahi was reelected as the speaker of the Upper House of Parliament, in an election that has been seen as a test of his ability to retain control of the house, which earlier opposed multiple unconstitutional moves by the current administration, including an attempted extension of the President’s term.
