Somalia’s spy agency says it arrests facilitators of SYL hotel attack

Mogadishu

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s spy agency said on Saturday that it had arrested 16 people suspected of facilitating an Al-Shabaab claimed gun and bomb attack on SYL hotel, which is located at a stone’s throw from the presidential palace.

The agency said in a statement that it had apprehended a man accused of facilitating the smuggling of vehicles packed with explosives into the heavily-fortified area on March 14 and four others registered as the owners of the vehicles used for the raid.

Five soldiers who were manning the security checkpoint that the vehicles and the attackers passed through have also been arrested, the agency added.

More than 30 people were killed and over 40 others wounded in the attack, according to prominent Somali journalist Abdalla Mumin Ahmed, though authorities confirmed only four deaths as a result of the 15-hour siege.
