MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s state employees attended an anti-Al-Shabaab rally called by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud amid an ongoing offensive against the militant group.
Images circulated online showed dozens of government employees attending the rally at Engineer Yarisow Stadium while covering their faces due to fear of being identified by rebels. Residents in the capital have not participated in the demonstration, in what opposition said showed the government’s dwindling popularity.
Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, who attended the rally, called on residents of the capital to support military operations against rebels in the central regions of Hiran and Middle Shabelle.
