HARGEISA (Somaliguardian) – Somaliland election commission said on Saturday it had become impossible to hold presidential election on Nov. 13 amid escalating tensions in the break-away region.
In a statement, the commission citing technical and financial obstacles stressed that the vote could be held in 9 months starting from Oct. 1, adding that the delay would allow it to register voters and complete preparations for the region’s presidential election.
Earlier, Somaliland opposition leaders vowed that they would no longer recognize Muse Bihi as regional president if the vote was not held on its due date.
At least 7 people were killed and more than 100 wounded last month when protesters demanding timely elections clashed with police in Hargeisa and a number of other cities in the self-proclaimed state.
