HARGEISA (Somaliguardian) – Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi has welcomed the election of Hassan Sheikh as the new President of Somalia and called for end to decades-long anti-secession sentiment in Mogadishu.
In a speech on Wednesday during celebrations for the 31st anniversary of the day Somaliland broke away from Somalia on May 18 1991, Bihi hailed the peaceful conduct of presidential vote in Mogadishu but accused Somali authorities of clinging to a view that Somaliland is still part of Somalia, despite its pursuit of an international recognition.
“We welcome the peaceful election of new president [in Somalia] and the two presidents who shook hands. We pray for continuation of such processes and end to disputes,” he said.
On Wednesday, the breakaway region celebrated its independence day with a military parade. Units of its army, tanks and military personnel carriers marched through the central street of Hargeisa. read more
