MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Leader of Waddani opposition party Hersi Ali Haji Hassan said on Saturday that he had escaped two “planned” attacks on his residence amid escalating tensions over an upcoming presidential vote.

He told a press conference in Hargeisa that arson and car-ramming attacks had targeted his residence following opposition announcement of protests demanding a timely presidential election.

On Friday, opposition parties said they had postponed a nationwide protest in response to calls from traditional leaders “to give mediation a chance” but ruled out that they intend to halt demonstrations altogether. read more

Hersi pointed finger of suspicion at the government of Muse Bihi Abdi over the attacks on his home. He added that during a protest on Thursday, security forces attempted to kill them by ramming police vehicles into their gathering.

Somaliland government has not yet commented on the claims by the senior opposition leader.
