Somaliland president blames ‘terrorists’ for deadly violence in Lasanod

HARGEISA (Somaliguardian) – Somaliland President Muse Bihi Abdi said on Monday international terrorists were behind stoking recent violence in the town of Lasanod that left dozens of civilians dead.

His remarks have come amid an ongoing summit of clan leaders in which regional intellectuals are expected to announce a new Somali federal member state, breaking ranks with Somaliland, a separatist region in northern Somalia.

Bihi stressed that terrorists carried out a spate of assassinations targeting officials from the town in an attempt to divide Somaliland people and pit residents against authorities in Hargeisa. Somaliland leader did not mention any group during his speech and provided no evidence for his assertion.

Regional elders and the leaders of the neighboring Puntland state earlier accused Bihi’s government of carrying out “massacre” in the town during protests by residents over spiraling insecurity.
