HARGEISA (Somaliguardian) – Somaliland president Muse Bihi Abdi on Tuesday received a US congressional staff delegation at his office in Hargeisa amid tensions in the break-away state over a potential delay to the presidential election.
The president tweeted that he was “honored to receive the US Congressional Staff Delegation” at his office in the presidential compound.
“The Republic of Somaliland is committed to working with democratic nations such as the US. We profoundly discussed Somaliland-US relations, stability, development, vibrant democracies and elections,” he added.
It comes just a day after MPs clashed with police officers deployed to break up a scuffle at the parliament headquarters in Hargeisa, in what the opposition claims to come following tensions stoked by president Bihi’s attempts to stay beyond his term in office and delay the upcoming presidential election.
