Somaliland president urges Nobel Peace Prize for Trump

HARGEISA (Somaliguardian) – Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi Irro has called for US President Donald Trump to be considered for the Nobel Peace Prize, praising what he described as Trump’s bold efforts to resolve global conflicts and his openness to recognizing Somaliland’s independence.

Speaking at a university graduation ceremony on Thursday, President Irro commended Mr. Trump for raising the issue of Somaliland’s recognition – something he said past US presidents had not dared to do.

“I thank the President of the United States, Donald Trump, who dared to bring the issue of Somaliland to his table – something his predecessors did not dare to discuss,” said President Irro. “I cannot do more in return than to add my voice in support of his candidacy for the Nobel Peace Prize. He is trying to end wars across the world – from Ukraine to Gaza and beyond.”

Somaliland, a self-declared independent republic in the Horn of Africa, broke away from Somalia in 1991 following the collapse of Siad Barre’s regime. While it has remained relatively stable and democratic compared to southern Somalia, it has not gained formal international recognition.

President Irro also praised recent efforts by US lawmakers to push for Somaliland’s recognition. He welcomed an open letter from US senator Ted Cruz addressed to Mr. Trump and applauded Congressman Scott Perry for introducing the Somaliland Recognition Act in the US House of Representatives.

“These calls from US legislators have angered our adversaries,” Irro said, reiterating that Somaliland would not return to union with Somalia.

In remarks clearly aimed at boosting national morale, President Irro told the audience that based on assessments of efforts made by his administration and those of his predecessors, formal international recognition for Somaliland may be imminent – and could even occur during his tenure. The statement drew enthusiastic applause from the crowd gathered for the graduation ceremony.
