MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – A suicide bomber attacked a convoy of government officials at a security checkpoint on the road linking to Adan Adde International Airport in Somalia’s capital Mogadishu on Wednesday, leaving a number of people dead, including members of security forces.
The sound of loud explosion was heard across the Somali capital and a plume of smoke rising from the scene could be seen immediately after the attack. Images circulated online showed damaged vehicles lined at the targeted checkpoint.
Somali police spokesman Abdifatah Adan Hassan told reporters that a man wearing an explosive vest blew himself up at a checkpoint along KM4-Airport road in Mogadishu, targeting a convoy including the vehicle of army officer General Garabey. The military official survived the blast, he added.
Mr Hassan said at least 7 people wounded in the attack but did not say if there were people killed in the suicide bombing. But local media reports put the death toll at four, though details on casualties caused by the attack were still scarce.
Al-Shabaab said it carried out the assault and had struck vehicles ferrying government officials to Afisyoni camp, an air force hanger outside Mogadishu airport where speeches of candidates vying for Somalia’s president had begun on Wednesday.
