MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – At least three people were killed and 15 others wounded after mortar shells landed near Somalia’s presidential palace in Mogadishu on Thursday, Universal TV reported.
Some of the mortar bombs missing targets landed on residential areas in Hamarwayne district. Residents in the city woke up on Thursday to loud explosions as the attack began shortly before morning prayers.
An MP who spoke to local media said some of the shells had hit the home of his son, inflicting casualties.
No one has immediately claimed responsibility. Al-Qaeda-aligned militant group Al-Shabaab said on Thursday it had carried out nearly a dozen attacks, including assassinations, explosions and gun assaults on security checkpoints in Mogadishu over the past 48 hours.
On Wednesday, Somali Senator Mohamed Ali Yusuf Gagab said the security in the Somali capital was getting worse by the day instead of getting better, and that the city is a no-go area for anyone without a bulletproof vehicle and 20 security escorts.
