MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – A senior official with the Islamist militant group Al-Shabaab said on Monday 30 Ethiopian soldiers were killed in a series of attacks in the southern Somalia region of Bakool over the past days.

In an interview with media affiliated with insurgents, Sheikh Osman Abu Abdirahman, Al-Shabaab’s shadow governor of Bakool region said 9 Ethiopian troops were killed in a single attack in Teed village and another 5 soldiers died in an assault near Garsaley, both near the town of Hudur in the southwestern Somalia region. He put the death toll of targeted Ethiopian forces at 30.

Ethiopia’s military and Somali security officials in the region have not immediately commented on the assertion. Somaliguardian has been unable to verify the claim independently.

It comes days after convoys of Ethiopian troops came under ambushes and roadside blasts on the road linking the border town of El-barde to other towns in Bakool region.
