Top commander among soldiers killed as insurgents attack base near Somalia’s capital


MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – A senior commander is among more than a dozen soldiers killed in an insurgent attack on army camps near Somalia’s capital Mogadishu on Saturday, Caasimada Online news website reported.

Al-Qaeda-aligned militant group Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility, saying it killed more than 57 soldiers in the dawn attack on military camps in Busley area on the southern outskirts of the capital. The group released images purporting to show military vehicles and prisoners of war it captured in the gun battle.

A senior commander with the military police units in charge of the security of the Somali capital is among the dead, according to local media.

Somalia’s army chief said in a statement that troops had repulsed the assault and inflicted losses on the assailants, but he did not give further details.
