MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – At least 11 people, including the administrator of the Somali coastal city of Marka Abdullahi Wafow, were killed on Wednesday after being targeted by a suicide blast.
The attack came hours after twin explosions rocked the town of Afgoye, some 30 km west of the capital Mogadishu that left at least four people dead.
Abdullahi Wafow played a key role in the fight against Al-Shabaab insurgents in the Lower Shabelle region and helped efforts by African Union peacekeepers to capture the coastal town from the Al-Qaeda affiliate.
Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the bombing in which Wafow lost his life.
“We killed in an attack the Marka district commissioner and those with him. In Afgoye, we killed two soldiers in an explosion,” a spokesman for Al-Shabaab Abdiasis Abu Musab told Reuters.
A local official told media that a suicide bomber attacked Wafow and other officials at the gate of the district headquarters shortly after he had come out of meeting. Mogadishu-based Dalsan Radio reported that least 11 people were killed and many more wounded.
