MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Turkish drones bombed and damaged a community-built school in the southern Somalia region of Middle Shabelle region close to the capital Mogadishu after Somali authorities urged partner nations to expand air strikes against militants.
The air raid took place last week in the Masajid Ali Gudud village, some 150 km north of the capital Mogadishu. It came days after insurgents repelled an offensive by government troops to retake it and nearby villages.
No casualties were reported as a result of the attack, but the strike cause considerable damage to the school building and led to the closure of the education facility. The school is the only of its kind in the village and nearby areas where students learn different subjects.
Images circulated online by media affiliated with Al-Shabaab showed trail of destruction at the school building in the aftermath of the Turkish aerial bombardment.
Last week, Somali government has not yet commented on the strike. Local media reports suggested that Hirshabelle regional leader Ali Gudlawe irked by the assault warned Somali army chief against ordering indiscriminate air raids on civilian targets in the village.
