MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Two former Somali Presidents Sharif Sheikh Ahmed and Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo said on Saturday that plans by the current government to change the constitution risk undermining national security and unity.
In a statement released after meeting with the leader of the semi-autonomous region of Puntland Saeed Abdullahi Deni, the two former presidents alleged that the incumbent President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud rejected proposals to open talks with Puntland in an attempt to end dispute on plans to overhaul the constitution.
The former presidents said they would hold a national consultative conference to discuss the current political crisis in the country and urged MPs to avoid anything that could harm the country’s fragile political stability.
