MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The ambassador of the United Kingdom to Somalia Mike Nithavrianakis has given an explanation after his comments referencing Somaliland and Somalia as distinct entities drew the ire of the Somali government.
“Just to be clear, there was no intention by this message to imply separate entities, merely a comment on wonderful work by an NGO,” UK ambassador said in a statement on X.
“The UK’s position on, and reaffirmation of, Somalia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty remains the same,” he added.
In response to the controversial comments of the UK ambassador, Somali Foreign Minister Ahmed Moalim Fiqi said the “reclassification [of Somalia and Somaliland] under two distinct names is utterly unacceptable and constitutes a blatant attack on the sovereignty and unity of Somalia.”
