MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The United Kingdom has condemned Iran-backed Houthi group based in Yemen over alleged links with Al-Shabaab, an Al-Qaeda offshoot fighting to topple Somalia’s Western-backed federal government.
“Recent reports showing Houthi links to Al-Shabaab. We firmly condemn these actions as part of a wider pattern of Houthi destabilizing activity beyond Yemen’s borders,” UK deputy representative to the UN James Kariuki said.
The remarks come following media reports that Houthi leadership was considering plans to supply drones and sophisticated military hardware to Al-Shabaab, triggering concerns that a possible inflow of such lethal weapons into Somalia could exacerbate already volatile security situation in the country and further embolden militants.
