WASHINGTON (Somaliguardian) – The United States on Wednesday asked Somalia’s President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo to support the Prime Minister in holding a meeting of the National Consultative Council (NCC) and completing elections quickly, after he was accused of an “attempted coup”.
US Assistant Secretary of State for African Affairs Molly Phee said on Wednesday she had spoken with Somalia’s President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo “about the urgent need to stop escalatory rhetoric and actions”.
“I stressed security forces should remain neutral ,” she tweeted. “I urged him to support PM … in convening the NCC and completing credible elections quickly.”
Phee, in a telephone conversation with the Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble, focused on the security, political and electoral situation in Somalia, days after power struggle between the country’s most powerful leaders escalated over alleged “coup attempt”.
