US congressman introduces bill to recognize Somaliland as independent state

WASHINGTON (Somaliguardian) – U.S. Congressman Scott Perry announced on Friday that he has introduced the Republic of Somaliland Independence Act, a piece of legislation aimed at formally recognizing the breakaway region of Somaliland as an independent state.

“I just introduced the Republic of Somaliland Independence Act to formally recognize Somaliland as an independent nation. For more than three decades, Somaliland demonstrated the kind of governance, stability, and cooperation that America should support,” Congressman Perry said on Twitter.

He added, “Foreign adversaries are on the march in Africa and around the globe, and it’s in our national interest to strengthen relationships with partners who share our values and contribute to our security – whenever and wherever prudent.”

Somaliland, a self-declared republic in the Horn of Africa, has operated independently from Somalia since 1991 but lacks international recognition. Perry’s bill marks a notable attempt to shift U.S. policy in favor of acknowledging Somaliland’s de facto autonomy.
