US drone strike in Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The United States military said on Sunday it had killed 15 Al-Qaeda-aligned Al-Shabaab militants in two separate air strikes conducted in support of Somali security forces.

“At the request of the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. Africa Command conducted two collective self-defense strikes, one each on Dec. 14 and 17, 2022, in support of Somali National Army engagements against al-Shabaab near Cadale, Somalia,” the US military said in a statement.

“U.S. Africa Command’s initial assessment is that no civilians were injured or killed in either strike,” it added.

Somali government said last week it had killed a senior member of clan militia aligned with the jihadists in the Middle Shabelle region and shared an image showing his dead body. It stressed that he was killed in an air raid.

Meanwhile, Al-Shabaab militants said on Saturday they had killed 19 US-trained Danab special forces, including the bodyguards of the elite force’s commander.
