US Supports Somalia PM’s Efforts to Hold Quick Polls, Says Prepares Actions on Peace Spoilers

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The United States on Monday supported Somalia Prime Minister’s efforts for rapid and credible elections and said it was prepared to act against those who obstruct the Horn of Africa country’s path to peace.

It came after power struggle between Roble and Farmajo escalated on Monday, with the President accusing his Premier of stealing public land belonging to the coastguard and the PM claiming that the head of state had orchestrated an “attempted coup” to overthrow the government in violation of the country’s laws.

The US State Department Bureau of African Affairs, said in a tweet, that Farmajo’s attempted suspension of the Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble is “alarming” and expressed support for his efforts to hold credible polls.

In a separate tweet by its embassy in Mogadishu, the United States called on Somalia’s leaders to de-escalate tensions and refrain from all provocations or use of force”.

Somalia’s international partners said they were “following with deep concern the current situation and political developments, urging the disputing sides to “put the country’s interests first, to de-escalate rising political tensions, and to refrain from provocation”.

The United states Africa Command urged Somalia’s armed forces to “focus on security threats” by militant groups and called for de-escalation of tensions.
