Somalia: Outrage Grows over Image of Ethiopian Soldiers Humiliating Civilian Man

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – A photo has circulated online showing uniformed Ethiopian soldiers posing with and humiliating a Somali civilian man in an area under the control of allied Somali and foreign troops in southern Somalia.

The undated photo, which has gone viral in social media over the last few hours, shows several Ethiopian soldiers humiliating, torturing and abusing a Somali civilian in an area not far from a major Ethiopian military base in the town of Hudur in Bakol region.

One of the Ethiopian soldiers could be seen smiling and pulling the civilian man by the nose while another was holding a gun at his head.

The horrific picture, which is not the first of its kind to reveal Ethiopian and other foreign troops’ ill-treatment of Somali civilians, has sparked outrage, with many calling it ‘morally repugnant’.

The area where the photo was taken is home to thousands of AMISOM and non-AMISOM Ethiopian troops, who are assigned to defend the town of Hudur from Al-Shabaab attacks as a siege laid by the group to the town remains in place since 2014.

Somali and Ethiopian governments have not immediately commented on the scandal.
