MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble has reneged on a promise – he made during a meeting with internal partners on Tuesday – to meet with regional state leaders and contribute to the efforts aimed at ending elections stalemate.
The meeting between the Prime Minister and the leaders of 5 regional states was expected to be held on Wednesday, but has been cancelled due to Mohamed Hussein Roble’s refusal to attend.
In a message sent to the international partners shortly after efforts to hold the meeting failed, Roble said the leaders of the federal member states were on the brink of reaching a deal and would later send the terms of their agreement to his office for a review.
To the international partners, it was an unexpected political gesture and a surprise that the PM changed his mind in just 24 hours and reneged on his promise, dashing their hopes over bringing an end to a dispute over the electoral process.
In a joint statement issued on Wednesday, Jubaland and Puntland leaders also expressed their frustration over failed attempts to end the dispute and accused president Farmajo of obstructing efforts aimed at resolving the tensions.
