Somalia’s Acting Education Minister Survives Bomb Attack

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s acting Minister of Education Abdullahi Godah Barre narrowly survived an assassination attempt after a vehicle he was traveling with struck a roadside bomb in the vicinity of Somalia’s Beled-hawo town.

The attack occurred as the minister was returning from the grave site of Somalia’s late president Mohamed Siad Barrre in Gedo region.

Photos circulated on social media showed significantly damaged vehicle that was transporting the minister and Somali MPs.

The Minister is said to have survived the attack, but 4 other people wounded. Among the wounded included parliamentarians Mohamed Ali Magan, Abdiasis Dhegaqol and Abdiqadir Sisi, who are all members of the federal parliament.

Reports from Beled-hawo say Luq district intelligence Chief Ali Kediye was among the injured.

Al-Shabaab armed group claimed credit for the attack. The group has recently stepped up attacks targeting government officials, troops and allied foreign forces.

In the last 48 hours, the Al-Qaeda-linked Islamist group has carried out more than 6 attacks in which nearly 40 people were killed, among them Somali government officials.
