Somalia’s Opposition Calls on Outgoing President to Quit

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – An alliance of opposition presidential candidates called on Somalia’s outgoing president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo to quit as dispute over an extension of his term tipped the country into escalating political crisis.

In a statement issued on Friday, the opposition accused the country’s embattled president of being a stumbling block in efforts aimed at bringing the crisis to an end and holding inclusive elections.

Protests against Mr Farmajo have taken place in Mogadishu on Friday, demanding his immediate resignation.

Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, better known as Farmajo, is due to address the parliament on Saturday in a session, which many are skeptical to have a hidden agenda, though house leadership earlier denied there had been plans to vote out the prime minister.

Opposition leaders warned MPs against “taking another illegal action” that may undermine the country’s security and electoral process after voting to extend the terms of both the executive and legislative branches of the government last month.

They urged the prime minister to play his role in bringing together the disputing sides to end the current standoff and ensuring peaceful polls are held without a further delay.
