MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s President Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has met with representatives of the international community at the presidential palace in Mogadishu amid a growing pressure on his government to end a long-standing dispute over elections, with only 10 days to go before his term expires.
During the meeting, President Farmajo said he is “committed” to holding elections in consistence with the September 17 electoral agreement with the leaders of the federal member states.
The president also praised his government’s relentless efforts aimed to ensure credible polls.
The Somali leader, whose term expires within 10 days, noted that his government made a number of compromises in a bid to hold elections, which is “worthy of encouragement” from the international community to ensure fruitful results in the efforts toward fair elections.
According to a statement issued by the president’s press secretary, the international community commended steps taken forward by the Somali government and pledged to continue supporting the Somali government’s endeavors to hold all-inclusive elections.
The UN envoy to Somalia said he was honored to join other international partners in a meeting with president Farmajo to discuss their long-running support for the country.
In a tweet posted by Mr Swan’s office added that “the urgency of resolving the country’s current electoral impasse” was part of the discussion, an issue not mentioned in the statement issued by Somali president’s press office.
Over the past days, international community representatives have been pressing for ending the current electoral dispute between the government of Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo and the leaders of Jubaland and Puntland states.
