Sudan Accuses Ethiopia of Arming Rebel Leader

KHARTOUM (Somaliguardian) – Sudan’s military said on Sunday that the Ethiopian government had provided logistical support, including weapons, ammunition and combat equipment to Joseph Touka’s forces in the Blue Nile.

Military sources were quoted by local media as saying that the weapons and other combat equipment had been handed over to Joseph Touka and some of his militia leaders in Yabous region on February 27.

Sudanese military officials accused the Ethiopian government of aiming to use the rebel commander to occupy the city of Kurmuk with the support of Ethiopian artillery, in an effort to distract Sudanese forces from military operations aimed to retake disputed lands on its eastern border with Ethiopia.

Ethiopia has not immediately commented on the allegation, which has come hours after Sudanese troops seized large weapons haul on Sunday.
