KHARTOUM (Somaliguardian) – Egyptian troops arrived in Sudan’s capital, Khartoum on Friday for a joint military drill amid escalating tensions with Ethiopia over a decade-long long water dispute, Sudan’s state-run news agency reported.
According to state media, Sudanese and Egyptian forces will launch military exercises dubbed “Guardians of the Nile” from mid-next week to the end of the month aimed at “strengthening bilateral relations and unifying methods on dealing with threats that both countries are expected to face.”
Sudan and Egypt did not say how many troops would participate in the maneuvers and apart from Egyptian forces that landed at Khartoum Air Base, another contingent of soldiers and army vehicles arrived by sea.
Sudanese military said that the exercises were “important and not linked to a specific issue”, denying that the number of troops participating was small, Al Arabiya has reported on Saturday.
