MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – A top Somali Islamist Sheikh Hassan Dahir Aways has sent a stern warning that efforts by president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, whose term ended on February 8, might break up Somalia.
The Islamist leader – who has been under house arrest in Mogadishu since 2013 – urged the Somali leader to pursue his political motives through a peaceful manner and not to play down concerns raised over a possible conflict if he continues consolidating his grip on power.
Regarded as statesman elder of Somali Islamists, Mr Aways reminded Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo that clans who are currently opposing his stay in power are those who had overthrown Somalia’s powerful military government in 1991 and that they are now able to topple his fragile, western-backed administration.
It’s the first time the former Al-Shabaab official, who had held senior leadership positions in several Islamist organizations before he was arrested in 2013, warns the Somali leader and his powerful intelligence chief against using force to silence their opposition.
