UK Calls for ‘Immediate Withdrawal’ of Eritrean Forces from Ethiopia’s Tigray

UK

NAIROBI (Somaliguardian) – The United Kingdom has called for the immediate withdrawal of Eritrean troops from the war-torn northern Ethiopian Tigray region amid increasing reports of atrocities committed in the region.

UK Minister for Africa James Duddridge said on Wednesday his government was concerned about report from Ethiopia’s Human Rights Commission on the situation in the conflict-hit region.

“The UK is concerned about this important report from @EthioHRC on the situation in Tigray, Ethiopia, noting the presence of Eritrean soldiers in the region,” James Duddridge tweeted.

“We call for their immediate withdrawal, as they are fueling conflict.”

It is the first the UK has demanded Eritrea troop pullout from Ethiopia and the statement comes weeks after the US said Eritrean forces should leave Tigray immediately.

Over the past few weeks, there have been reports that Eritrean troops stepped up looting and destruction of properties in the region and committed mass killings as well as other atrocities against humanity.

Although the Ethiopian government still denies presence of Eritrean forces in Tigray, there have been multiple footages showing Asmara’s forces in the region, many of which showing them involved in looting activities.
