US Urges Somalia’s Farmajo to Accept ‘Clear Path’ to Peace

Somalia

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – The United States embassy in the capital, Mogadishu urged Somalia’s outgoing president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo to accept a path to peace after violence racked the capital over the past days.

“We urge Farmajo to accept the clear path to dialogue and peace,” the embassy said in a statement on Tuesday.

It welcomed a decision reached by the leaders of Hirshabelle and Galmudug regional state leaders, and the country’s Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble to reject an extension of the outgoing president’s term in office by two years.

The statement has come days after clashes between opposition-aligned forces and troops loyal to Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed, better known as Farmajo, sparked fears over a return by the country to another civil war and led hundreds of families to flee their homes.
