Somalia: Al-Shabaab Creates Coronavirus Oversight Committee

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) –The Al-Qaeda franchise of East Africa, Al-Shabaab has announced a new coronavirus oversight committee as infections in the country edge closer to hitting record high.

In a statement, the Islamist group said an oversight coronavirus committee of 7 members including religious scholars, doctors and intellectuals was appointed, tasked with monitoring the health situation in the country and in particular, large swathes of territory under the control of the group.

Influx of people fleeing from major towns in Somalia affected by coronavirus has prompted the designation of the new committee, according to the statement.

Al-Shabaab says the committee will provide recommendations on the health situation in the regions under their control and will start operation soon after top officials provide an order.

The group calls on regional officials to provide needed support and facilitate efforts by the committee to prevent spread of coronavirus in the areas under their control.

The statement has come following a meeting held between officials of Al-Shabaab’s Political Office that has led to the designation of committee comprising 7 members to oversee efforts by the group toward curbing the spread of COVID19.

As explained in the statement, no coronavirus cases have yet been found the towns and regions under Al-Shabaab’s control, but the group now wants to take precautionary measures amid influx of people fleeing from worst affected cities including Mogadishu, Kismayo and Jowhar.
