MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s ambassador to China Awale Ali Kulane has condemned stances by Taiwan to further strengthen diplomatic ties with Somaliland and warned that the moves could lead to instability in the Horn of Africa region.

The ambassador said Taiwan’s attempts to maintain diplomatic relations with Somaliland, which is a breakaway region of Somalia, is a violation against the unity and the territorial integrity of the Horn of Africa nation, adding that Somali government considers Taiwan a Chinese territory.

We condemn Taiwan’s relations with Somaliland and we are always committed to safeguarding the independence of Somalia and its territorial integrity, from whether its Taiwan or any other entity,” Somali ambassador to China Awale Ali Kulane said.

This could lead to instability in northern Somalia and insecurity in the region as it maintains diplomatic ties with a break-away region.”

It follows a high-profile visit by a delegation led by Somaliland Foreign Minister Eise Keyd to Taiwan during which he met with Taiwanese president and pitched investment opportunities in the untapped oil and gas reserves in the break-away state.
