Somalia’s PM names committee to assess security situation in Jubaland’s second election site

MOGADISHU (Somaliguardian) – Somalia’s Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble on Monday appointed a committee to assess the security situation, facilities and opinions of key stakeholders in the town of Garbaharey, Jubaland’s second election site.

The move follows remarks by regional officials, who earlier said elections could not be held in the region, citing fear of potential meddling by troops loyal to the incumbent president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo, who are in control of Garbaharey and other towns in Gedo region.

Staff at the Premier’s office and election officials are among the members of the team appointed on Monday, who would report to the Prime Minister within seven days after concluding their fact-finding mission.

Jubaland is the only regional state which is not in control of its second election site and the issue has been the epicenter of disputes between Somalia’s federal and regional leaders over the past years. Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has been accused of attempting to rig 16 parliament seats in his home town.
